Webinar: 2022-12-13: Is it Behavior or Sensory? Part 1
Is it Behavior or Sensory? Part 1 presented by Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, MS OTR, C/NDT, FAOTA & Betty Paris, PT M.Ed., C/ NDT.
December 13, 2022 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM EST
Webinar description
The confusing and challenging behaviors children often demonstrate cause parents, teachers, and therapists to ask the question: Is it sensory or is it behavior? The speakers skillfully guide participants through the complex interrelationship between sensory, communication, and behavioral problems seen in individuals.
Parents, teachers, and therapists must be able to understand these behaviors, identify the underlying cause, and develop interventions to alter the behaviors, remediate the underlying problems, and implement these programs in multiple environments.
Through a variety of learning activities, participants will learn to use the Intervention for Challenging Behavior flow chart and the ABC model to analyze why children behave the way they do, sorting out sensory-based problems from other causes. A case study will be utilized to demonstrate how to analyze the underlying problem(s) and design intervention programs that include preventatives, skills development, and reinforcers/ consequences, needed to address the underlying emotional, sensory, and behavioral needs, and build effective coping strategies.
Learning Objectives - At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to:
1. Identify behaviors that are obtaining and avoidance in nature, determine the core problems and appropriate intervention strategies;
2. Using the Intervention for Challenging Behavior flow sheet, participants will differentiate sensory from non-sensory behaviors, identify which behaviors are obtaining and avoiding, and determine the core underlying problem(s) that need to be addressed;
3. Identify the 3 basic components to a comprehensive intervention program and where sensory-based interventions fit.
