A Sensory Perspective on Helping Adolescents and Young Adults Learn to Deal with Difficult Emotions
VIDEO CLIPS
Overview: The ability to self-regulate is crucial in the emotionally charged middle and high school years. This interactive workshop will offer ideas and activities drawn from the new Sensory Connection Program: Curriculum for Self-Regulation to help your students develop skills in ways that are fun and engaging. The mnemonic Pause, Connect, Engage will be used as a way to teach students to recognize signs and symptoms of emotional difficulty, seek help, and employ effective sensory coping skills.
Learning Objectives: Participants will:
Learn ways to use or adapt the Sensory Connection Program curriculum for use in schools and behavioral programs;
Explore ways to help students "tune in" to physical and emotional responses and learn how to make adjustments for comfort and function;
Develop a repertoire of games and activities to help students learn and practice self-regulation skills;
Understand neurological research on our stress response system that uses our evolved neural circuits to promote calm states, self-sooth and engage with others rather than resorting to "fight or flight" responses.
