100% Listening - Primary

Ages: 5-7 / Grades: K-2

Help students understand and interpret what they hear more effectively. These lessons give students ample practice in applying new listening skills to the classroom.

The one-page lessons are organized into fourteen units. The units
are sequenced to reflect general language and thinking development with some overlap of skills.

Phonological Awareness—rhyming, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, sound manipulation
Repetition—clapping patterns, words, numbers, proper nouns, sentences
Answering Questions—yes/no, attributes, categories, wh- questions, true/false
Following Directions—follow two- and three-step directions, draw described items, give directions, and more
Categories—identify and name categories, add members to categories
Riddles—guess an item based on clues moving from the general to the specific
Asking Questions for Comprehension—formulate questions from a prompt, identify unclear messages, ask questions to clarify vague messages
Paraphrasing—use synonyms, determine important information, restate information
Identifying Details—answer wh- and how questions about sentences, math problems, and short stories; identify pronoun referents
Main Idea—make inferences, summarize, identify cause and effect, identify nonverbal clues
Differentiating Speakers' Purposes—identify types of listening situations, distractions, and good listening skills
Grammar—identify correct and incorrect grammar and parts of sentences, unscramble words to make a sentence
Inferences—look and listen for clues, picture events in your mind
Nonverbal Communication—posture, gesture, facial expression, intonation, word emphasis
