One of the primary challenges in a child's life is to become independent with daily living skills. Before the age of four, children are expected to learn to use utensils during meals, dress and undress independently, become toilet trained, and master most of the steps of personal hygiene. A child's self-concept is intertwined with the ability to care for him/herself. Mastery over self-care is critical for building friendships, gaining social acceptance at school and lays the foundation for future employability and successful integration into the community as an adult.
